This is the list where the cheap truck wins, and I want to explain why that's not a gimmick. The Work Score measures capability per configuration — payload, ratings, job-site hardware — and base work trims simply carry more of it. Comfort options add weight; weight comes out of payload; payload is the score. The plain truck isn't winning on a technicality. It's winning on physics.
The very top of this list belongs to HD platforms in work spec — and chassis-cab configurations, which are essentially born upfit-ready: maximum ratings, minimum garnish, wiring and frame rails waiting for whatever your trade bolts on.
Payload and the weight ratings are the dominant movers — they're most of the score, deliberately. Behind them, the job-site hardware earns its points: upfitter switches, in-bed power, cargo lighting, the payload and work packages, HD alternator, dual batteries, transmission cooler, and the durability spec.
Work scores stack up top-heavy — lots of trucks carry real payload — so the separation that matters is in the details: packages, wiring, and endurance hardware are what split the top band from the middle.
The fingerprint at the top: work trim, the longer bed, HD gas engine, max payload package — and frequently 2WD, which surprises people until they remember 4x4 hardware weighs several hundred pounds and payload pays for it.
Learn the fleet-spec tells: vinyl floors, cloth seats, steel wheels, base infotainment. Those aren't cost-cutting shame; they're a build sheet that knows its job. And look one rung up for the sleeper values — mid-trims carrying the work-oriented package post nearly identical scores with slightly more livable cabs.
Used fleet returns are the value play on this list, with one rule: mileage is not the enemy. A high-mile truck with fastidious service records beats a low-mile truck with none. The maintenance folder is the spec sheet's second half.
The top of this list commutes poorly — heavy springs, work tires, plain cabs. A 90-plus work truck as a daily driver is a choice your spine gets a vote on.
Gas versus diesel in the HD tier: the top of the list includes both; annual miles and trailer weight pick between them, same as ever.
And the 2WD-versus-4x4 pattern is worth restating because it runs against instinct: two-wheel drive dominates the top of this ranking. If your sites are paved, the drivetrain everyone assumes is a downgrade is actually the higher-scoring truck.

A work truck earns its score doing the job — payload and hardware, not chrome.
A work truck earns its score with payload, weight ratings, upfits, and HD hardware — what it hauls, what it pulls, and what it costs you per pound of capability. I don't hand out points for luxury a job site will destroy, and 4x4 only counts when the work actually calls for it. The best work score usually belongs to the plainest truck on the lot. That's not a flaw. That's the point.
Payload, weight ratings, upfits, and HD hardware matched to the job — plus what you're paying per pound of that capability. Vinyl floors don't hurt. Chrome doesn't help.
Because work scoring counts capability per dollar. A base regular cab carries more, tows plenty, and costs $20k less than the leather version of itself. For work, that's winning.
Only if the work needs it. On pavement and job sites, 2WD carries more payload and costs less to buy and run. 4x4 doesn't add work points on its own; it earns its place when the job actually leaves the road.
Diesel for sustained heavy towing and high mileage; gas for everything else. Diesel's upfront and maintenance costs need real miles to pay back.
Sure — the scores are independent. A loaded crew cab can haul and pamper. It'll just cost you more per pound of the hauling part.
Because comfort options add weight, weight subtracts payload, and payload is most of this score. The Lariat isn't losing — it's competing on my Comfort list, where it does very well.
