What overlanding is really about
Three different hobbies get sold under one badge, and it pays to know which one you're buying for. Overlanding is multi-day, self-supported travel — dirt roads, forest service routes, a truck that carries your camp and gets you back out. Off-roading is technical terrain for its own sake. Crawling is the extreme end — rocks, lockers, walking speed. Different disciplines, different hardware.
Here's what I've noticed: most buyers who ask me for "off-road" actually want overland-shaped hardware — clearance, real tires, fuel range, confidence on a washboard road — not crawler hardware. And that's good news, because overland capability costs less than rock-crawling capability.
One more honest thing, because that's my whole job: most trucks sold with adventure badges will see maybe five hundred dirt miles in their lifetime. That's fine. Nobody's judging — no bad trucks, remember. But pay for the hardware you'll actually use, not the decal package that photographs well.
How I score off-road
Credit goes to hardware that changes what terrain a truck can handle — and the two that move my score most are ground clearance and locking differentials, because those two decide what's possible. Real four-wheel drive with low range is close behind. Then the supporting cast: factory skid plates, a disconnecting sway bar, hill descent control, dedicated crawl modes, and the off-road packages that bundle retuned suspension and trail hardware.
The approach and departure angles matter enormously on the trail — and they're a place I'll be honest about my own limits: window stickers rarely print them, so they show up in my score mainly through the packages and trims that improve them. Same with tires: what's on the truck today matters more than what left the factory, which is why tread is on your checklist, not just mine.
No credit for the costume: appearance packages wearing trail-flavored badges without the hardware underneath, adventure-colorway paint, roof rails with nothing on them, decals. If the spec sheet doesn't back the badge, my score won't either.
What to look for
Real 4x4 with low range. All-wheel drive is not the same thing. AWD gets you through the slick parking lot; low range lets you choose your line at walking speed with torque to spare. If the trail is real, low range is the floor.
Ground clearance measured, not marketed. Around 8.5 inches is street-truck territory. Ten-plus is where trails open up. Eleven-plus is purpose-built. The half inch between marketing and measurement matters at exactly the wrong moment.
The off-road package — hardware or costume? This is where the order sheet separates trucks that look the part from trucks built for it. A real off-road package — think ZR2, Tremor, TRD Off-Road, Rebel tiers — typically bundles retuned suspension with better dampers, a locking rear differential, skid plates, all-terrain tires, recovery points, and drive modes that change throttle and braking behavior on dirt. An appearance package brings the badge, the wheels, and the black trim. Same silhouette in the parking lot, completely different truck on the trail — and my score reads the spec sheet, not the sticker on the bedside. When two similar trucks wear different Off-Road Scores, this package line is usually why.
Fuel tank size. Overlanding runs out of range before it runs out of terrain. A 26-gallon tank versus a 36-gallon tank is the difference between one fuel stop and anxiety math on a 300-mile trail day.
The tradeoffs nobody escapes
Size versus terrain: full-size trucks bring payload and power, but midsize trucks turn corners on tight trails that a crew-cab long-bed simply cannot. Pick your terrain first, then your truck size.
Lift versus livability: raised suspension buys clearance and costs you ride quality, towing stability, and the top floor of every parking garage.
Purpose-built versus package: the factory trail flagships win the trail outright — and add serious money while giving up payload and towing versus their plainer siblings. The package-equipped mid-trim gets you most of the way there for a fraction.
Weight versus clearance: a seven-thousand-pound crew cab digs in where a five-thousand-pound midsize walks over. Physics doesn't read trim names.

What's the difference between overlanding and off-roading?

Do I need low range, or is AWD enough?
For real trails, low range. AWD handles slick pavement and gravel fine, but low range multiplies torque at walking speed — that's what controlled descents, steep loose climbs, and technical sections demand. It's the clearest line between a truck that handles bad roads and a truck built for no roads.
What ground clearance do I need for trails?
Ten inches is the honest threshold where trail driving stops being a wince-per-mile exercise. Around 8.5 inches — where many street trucks sit — handles dirt roads and mild two-track. Eleven-plus is purpose-built territory. And clearance works with approach and departure angles, not instead of them.
Are all-terrain tires enough, or do I need mud-terrains?
All-terrains cover the vast majority of overland use — dirt, gravel, rock, light mud — while staying civil on the highway. Mud-terrains buy aggressive traction in deep mud and loose rock at the cost of road noise, wet-pavement grip, and fuel economy. If you're asking, you almost certainly want ATs.
Which is better off-road: full-size or midsize?
Midsize for tight, technical terrain — shorter wheelbase, less weight, better angles. Full-size for overland load-hauling — more payload, more range, more power. The highest scores on my lot include both, because they're winning different games.
